Einstein’s Theory on the Expansion of the Universe Proved After a Century

Albert Einstein’s theory regarding the expansion of the Universe has been demonstrated about 100 years after he came with the hypothesis, experts have revealed.

Back in 1917, Einstein discovered that this theory of relativity suggested that the Universe must be either expanding or shrinking, so he came with the idea of a cosmological constant: vacuum energy to compensate the impacts of gravity and attain a static Universe. This notion was then taken into consideration rapidly.

The Universe is Expanding at an Accelerated Pace

The physician then quit the concept until 1931, when Edwin Hubble’s finding demonstrated that the Universe is expanding, naming it the ‘biggest blunder.’ Therefore, from the 1930s to the 1990s, the majority of researchers have believed that the cosmological constant was equal to zero. However, over a decade on, Brian Schmidt made an outstanding discovery that the Universe was actually not only expanding, but the process was a high-speed one.

Brian Cox unveiled on the Joe Rogan podcast that the reason behind the theory’s proposing was to imply some type of dark energy in the Universe.

He said back in 2019: “There is five times as much dark matter as there is normal matter and the number is 25 percent of the Universe. Roughly speaking, about five percent of the Universe is normal matter, stars, and gas. About 70 percent is dark energy, that’s the thing we don’t know, but we know what it does.”

“Einstein’s theory works spectacularly well; it says that if you put stuff into the Universe, then it warps and deforms and stretches. It very precisely tells you, given what you put into it, how much it stretches.”

Professor Cox then explained how Dr. Schmidt’s discovery helped researchers detect dark energy. He said that the measurement the researchers now have is expanding, and they notice how the Universe is widening and how that rate changes. Then, they can use the hypothesis to decipher what is in it, considering that they already know the way it is responding.

“That’s how we discovered dark energy; we noticed that the Universe’s expansion rate was increasing. The Universe is accelerating in its expansion, which is exactly the opposite of what we thought,” Prof. Cox added.

A Discovery Worth of the Nobel Prize

Dr. Schmidt was awarded the Noble Prize in 2011 for his work. He was, however, not trying to demonstrate that dark energy existed.

Professor Cox said: “We can work out what sort of stuff and how much of that stuff you need to put in the Universe to make that happen. That’s where we get these numbers from. One of my friends, Brian Schmidt, got the Nobel Prize for that, he was making measurements of a supernova explosion. He noticed that if you look at the dates, the light is stretched in the wrong way, so it changes color.”

That phenomenon suggested that the expansion pace is accelerating, and it has been speeding up for seven billion years now. Dr. Schmidt, who thought he would be a laughing stock for doubting the basis of physics, thought be had done something wrong. Therefore, he verified again and again, and finally published the research so someone else could discover what he had done wrong.

“He thought it would be the end of his career, but he got the Nobel Prize,” Professor Cox said.
