Five Underrated Indie Games to Play in 2020

While most gamers love a first-shooter or war-themed game, there are numerous indie titles that are as magical and exciting to play as the popular ones who are bound by corporate influence.

Indie titles have been incredibly successful, with titles like Stardew Valley and Hades proving that games do not have to pack the most advanced graphics to be excellent. However, because of a lack of advertising or marketing budgets, some of these magnificent indie games remain in the shadow.

Here are five of the best underrated indie games for PC.

Oxenfree

Oxenfree launched in September 2016, and besides its beautiful art, has an incredibly immersive and unfeigned narrative. The title doesn’t have cut scenes, so players can enjoy the story as they go through it.

The gameplay has gamers investigate on an island after a supernatural phenomenon took place. It features interactions and options players have to choose from between interactions, as well as a map that players can use in order to complete certain tasks.

Recettear: An Item Shop’s Tale

Recettear’s main gameplay has gamers manage their virtual shop. Players can customize their boutique’s design, choose the stocks they want to sell, and use a dungeon-crawling system that’s pretty useful.

The title was released in September 2010 and has fun gameplay, a great narrative, and an amazing art style.

The Witness

The Witness is perhaps one of the best puzzle games ever released. It launched in 2016 and depicts an island that has to be explored via countless puzzles offering more than 100 hours of gameplay. The title is as simple as it is difficult, but it is worth trying if you love puzzles and challenges.

Hades

Hades launched last year on December 10th, and it is one of the best rogue-like titles to launch in the last few years. It features an amazing story, as well as some of the most smooth combat mechanics you can find in this game category.

Due to the fact that it has the playability of a rogue-like game, new runs do not feel like a variant of an old run, but they are different, and you don’t give you the chance to predict the outcomes.

Hades also provides great mechanics, such as the ‘boon system’ and regular upgrades players can use when they fight. The game is still in Early Access on Steam, but it is already incredibly popular.

Baba is You

Baba is You is perhaps the most underrated puzzle game for PC. It packs numerous levels which can be completed as players find their way through obstacles and capture the flag. The game launched in March of 2019 and packs a very unique and ‘silly’ concept.

Players have to push around ‘blocks’ of words, so they get with magical effects. For instance, there’s a scene with hot water, and players have to figure out how to get to the other side. There are a few blocks of words, such as ‘melt’ and ‘float,’ and for this particular example, players have to replace the word after ‘Baba is You’ with ‘float’ in order to reach the other side and grab the flag. There are numerous such variations of the gameplay that make the player think.
