Google Pixel 4a XL: Is the Phone Canceled or Should We Wait For It?

The Google Pixel 4a is said to be released this July or August, but it may be the only in the series, as some reports have suggested Google canceled the development of Pixel 4a XL. Last time, the tech giant launched a Pixel 3a and a Pixel 3a XL, so we’re not sure what made the company shelve the XL model this time around if it indeed did that.

Here is what we know about the Pixel 4a XL, based on leaks so far.

Google Pixel 4a XL – Release Date and Price

If Google decided to keep working on the Pixel 4a XL, it would be revealed alongside the Pixel 4a. The latest rumor has Google hosting an online-only event on July 13th and the smartphone itself launching in August. Initially, it was thought that the tech giant would launch the Pixel 4a in May at the Google I/O conference, but the event was canceled due to the pandemic.

Again, if Google decided to make the Pixel 4a XL a reality, it would probably have a price tag of $80 more than the regular counterpart. Some recent rumors imply that the Pixel 4a would cost $349, which would have the Pixel 4a XL price around $429.

Google Pixel 4a XL – Screen Size

The Pixel 4a will allegedly sport a 5.8-inch OLED display, in comparison to the 5.6-inch screen the Pixel 3a had. The Pixel 3a XL packs a 6-inch OLED display, but there were no speculations regarding the screen size of a Pixel 4a XL.

The phone’s render leak showcases possible dimensions, however, at 154.3 x 73.9 x 8.2 mm. That would be a lot smaller than the 160.1 x 76.1 x 8.2 mm dimensions for the Pixel 3a XL.

Google Pixel 4a XL – Camera Setup

The Pixel 4a XL was speculated to pack dual rear cameras, in comparison to the single 12MP rear camera the Pixel 4a is said to have. What is not clear, though, is whether the XL model would sport a telephoto lens as the second shooter or an ultra-wide camera.

Google Pixel 4a XL – Is it Actually Cancelled?

Back in January, YouTuber Dave Lee reported that Google would be canceling the Pixel 4a XL from its upcoming series of smartphones. Allegedly, the Pixel 3a XL did not bring as much revenue as the smaller and cheaper Pixel 3a. Since then, there were other reports that clearly stated the Pixel 4a XL is not coming, although it may have been under development.

Front Page Tech’s Jon Prosser leaked the launch date of the Pixel 4a in May and did not even mention the XL model. According to 9to5Google, purported parts for a Pixel 4a XL leaked on eBay back in April, suggesting a dual-lens camera. However, after a while, @xleaks7 and accessories retailer Pigtou designed a render of what the Pixel 4a XL would look like but said the phone would not launch.

Google has not confirmed nor denied the existence of the Pixel 4a or Pixel 4a XL, but right now, a Pixel 4a XL release seems highly improbable.
