HP Collaborates With Valve and Microsoft on Its Next-Generation Reverb G2 Headset

HP has just revealed this week that Microsoft and Valve will also be involved in its next-generation development of the Reverb G2 VR headset. The company said that the device would offer users a more immersive and comfortable virtual reality experience that it will become the new typical model for the industry.

The announcement has been made through a brief summary on the company’s website. There is also a short teaser video that has been published on HP’s Twitter account as well:

The company’s previous Reverb headset was not that impressive, but it was notable because of its great resolution of 2160 x 2160 pixels per eye. It won’t be such a surprise if HP intends to work with the resolution envelope further this time around with the G2 model.

What This Collaboration Means

The previous device was part of Microsoft’s Windows Mixed Reality headsets, with Valve’s StreamVR platform already supporting the series alongside other items from Oculus and HTC. So, we’re not sure as of yet what this particular collaboration between HP, Microsoft, and Valve entrails.

The headset seems to be incredibly similar to the old model, with two black spots that suggest the use of Windows Mixed Reality tracking cameras, instead of StreamVR-style external tracking headlights.

Unlike Valve’s Index device, HP’s Reverb G2 most likely is not created as a gaming headset in the first place, but it is one that suits professionals as well. However, if it doesn’t seem to have impressive resolution and good comfort, then it may yet prove to be a top option for playing games like the gaming studio’s Half-Life: Alyx.

There is no release date information as of yet, so it is not clear whether it will reduce the current headset shortage. It might be delayed because of the coronavirus crisis, which has hindered the production of current Valve and Oculus products.
