New Research Demonstrates The World’s Oceans Were the Hottest Ever in 2019

Last year, all of Earth‘s water bodies kept warming up, with the memorable 2019 being the hottest year ever recorded so far, a research led by Chinese scientists reveals. The study was published on the web on Monday.

The worldwide ocean temperatures of last year were about 0.075 degrees Celsius hotter than the historical medium starting from 1980 to 2010. With more than 90 percent of the excess heat created by greenhouse gas emissions swallowed by the oceans, researchers are able to estimate the level of water warming that has taken place in the last few years and its effects on the rate of global warming.

The research, which was issued in the journal Advances in Atmospheric Sciences, claimed that the impacts from warmer ocean temperatures have by now resulted in more extreme weather, harm to the marine life, and a rise in sea levels.

The Threat is Real

The data used for this research was recorded by China’s Institute of Atmospheric Physics and the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, measuring ocean temperatures at a depth of 2,000 meters below sea levels.

Cheng Lijing, senior author of the study and scientists at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), reported that the temperature alteration is major, mentioning that the oceans have absorbed a quantity of heat equal to 3.6 billion Hiroshima atom bomb blow-offs over the last 25 years – equal to approximately 394,520 atomic bombs every day.

Cheng stated: “This measured ocean warming is irrefutable and is further proof of global warming,” with the global ocean temperatures leveling up, on average, by 450 percent over the past 60 years, as cited by Xinhua.

Back in October 2019, the journal Nature Communications published research claiming that the increase in global sea levels because of climate change is endangering China’s coastlines.
