Sony has the earnings report, and it seems that PS5 and Xbox will have the same price. It’s all about the competition, and it seems that this time those two rivals made a deal. Sony came with a very unique marketing strategy, and so far, it seems to be working.
Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki explained that competition in the console industry is something the company needs to consider before discussing the price of the PlayStation 5.
After a little research, we found out that PS 4 was 100$ less then Xbox One at launch, also the Xbox price was never mentioned, but we know that PS 4 was 400$, so if we do some math, we can presume that Xbox’s price was 500$.
Why PlayStation 5 needs to have the same price as the Xbox Series X
The price that Xbox had made Sony look a little bit bad and less appealing, but users had much more confidence in Sony than Xbox. Chief Marketing Officer Yusuf Mehdi said that at the time that Microsoft was looking to break even or low margin at worst.
Sony learned from the mistake, and it will not raise the price again. In 2007 and 2008, Sony had a loss of over 3.8 billion $ because the price was not affordable for everyone. They charged 600$ per device. This was after the Xbox launch its product in 2006.
The thing is that Sony and Microsoft will have almost the same price for their products, but as Sony relates, we shouldn’t expect the same amount that we had on the premium console.
Even though Sony is a little bit constrained about the previous situation, neither Microsoft will raise the price very high they’re afraid of losing customers. If Sony’s comments are real, we can expect that PS5 to have the same price as Xbox Series X or lower.
