Researchers Suggest New Cause and Drug for Dementia

Researchers have come up with a new hypothesis for what may cause dementia and a way to inverse it, a new series of studies say.

Scientists couldn’t figure out what causes Alzheimer’s disease until now, which is the most common form of dementia. Not knowing the exact origin of the illness, it is incredibly difficult to treat it. Science told us for a long time that, as we age, the blood-brain barrier, which is a wall of thick cells and blood vessels that defends the brain from any foreign elements in the blood that cannot be there and could damage the vital neurons, is at risk.

Prior to this research, it was believed that aging itself is the cause of death in brain cells, but University of California, Berkeley scientists discovered that it may be the porosity of the blood-brain barrier that enables the entrance of dangerous substances that in turn, cause cell death and ‘inflammatory fog.’

A team of researchers at the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel discovered that the particular inflammatory fog interferes with brain waves in mice in a similar way to what is found in EEGs scans of patients suffering from Alzheimer’s.

Causes and Treatment Are Still Attempted

Recently, a California chemist was able to develop a drug that can penetrate the dense blood-brain barrier, rehabilitating brainwaves in mice to be like those of healthy young animals. This new drug could be a potential medication for dementia.

In the U.S. alone, 5.8 million people are suffering from Alzheimer’s, and as the population grows older, the number of people affected will only increase. At the moment, there is almost no hope for these people.

For decades now, the harmful proteins called amyloid-beta have been considered the main cause of Alzheimer’s disease. However, numerous attempts to address these plaques have failed clinical trials, and while some scientists are trying to find deeper layers of the amyloid possibility, others have begun to believe other causes might be the culprit.

The most recent option being examined is the leakage of damaging substances into the brain. Almost 60 percent of people with ages over 70 have seeping blood-barriers, Dr. Alon Friedman of Ben-Gurion University in Israel discovered.

Neurons are incredibly fragile types of nerves, and liaise with any foreign elements can initiate ravaging inflammation and cell death.

Dementia is a severe condition, and it’s essential to become aware of the early signs in order to be able to tame them. For instance, anxiety may be an early symptom of Alzheimer’s, which is a form of dementia that is characterized by memory issues, behavioral changes, and more. Anxiety and depression can also be included in the symptos of dementia as well, and such conditions have to be addressed by specialized therapists. You can find some great therapists who can be custom-matched to help you through whatever you are going through here.

You should never be ashamed to ask for help in order to protect your health and well-being.
