How Rick and Morty Became the Success That It Is Today

Rick and Morty is one of the best animated series for adults. We meet Rick and Morty. Rick is a smart grandpa (way too smart), and Morty is his grandson and sidekick. The cartoon is full of dark humor, incredible adventures, and it has earned its place as one of the best out there right now.

Have you ever thought about why it is so similar to Back to the Future? The reason why, is that the series was created after the release of a parody of this movie. The creator of the series is also the voice of both Rick and Morty. It is safe to say that the series has gained a lot of critical attention because it’s full of dark humor, but also it’s inventive and authentic. Even if it may not seem like that, the show is a rollercoaster of emotions, and here there is all there is to know about it.

Rick and Morty was developed by Ryan Ridley, Jessica Gao, and Dan Guterman. Before getting the 5th season, here is all you need to know about the first four.

Its IMDB rating is 9.2/10. You can watch it on Netflix and Amazon Prime. As of now, there are 41 episodes available.

What about the cast?

  • Rick Sanchez – Justin Roiland
  • Morty Smith – Justin Roiland
  • Jerry Smith – Chris Parnell

  • Jessica  – Kari Wahlgren

4 seasons – 41 episodes. Everything there is to know:

Season 1 – 11 episodes

  • Summary

Of course, the pilot starts with dark humor. The Smith family is presented to us. There is Rick Sanchez, the intelligent scientist, and Morty, who has been skipping school to hang out with his grandpa. He hasn’t been to school for an entire semester.

We do learn more about this grandpa-grandson team. They are fighting lots of creatures, and Rick always finds a way to kill them.

These stories are legendary, but it is safe to say that some of them are also quite disturbing – we can see them travel from timeline to timeline. We see Rick and Morty travel through dreams so that Morty could perform well in exams. They visit even a clone of the Jurassic Park. We also have aliens. We have this disease named after one of the main characters: Morty flu.

In the final episode, we see how Rick gets accused by the Council of Ricks for crimes that he did not commit. Rick and Morty try to find a way out, saying that the ones who committed the crimes were their evil counterparts. The episode is finished with Rick accidentally sending the house into another dimension.

  • Summary

In the second season, we see Rick and Morty and Morty’s sister, Summer, spending some quality time by pausing time itself. They’ll get to the planet that had Jerry’s daycare, Morty’s dad. The brothers find Rick’s love interest, called Unity.

Then we have the family having to deal with a kind of weird crisis that requires them to remember who the real parasitic aliens are. Beth, Morty’s mom, and Rick’s daughter accidentally kills Mr. Poopybutthole, who is also a great character of the series.

Rick shows Morty that aliens that live can fuel car batteries. We also see how Ricky turns himself into his miniature version, that’s called Tiny Rick, and does a lot at Morty’s school. They also spend a lot of time watching interdimensional cable, where we see Jerry getting admitted to the hospital.

In the final episodes, we get to see Tammy that’s getting married to Birdperson, and the Smith family decides to attend their marriage ceremony. However, things get a lot more complicated when Tammy reveals that she was a Federation Agent, something that makes it even harder for Rick, who is one of the most wanted people.

The family is trying to escape and hide away. However, Tammy is way too powerful. We see Rick turning himself in.  Eventually, the family returns to a Federation-controlled planet, that now is also full of aliens.

Among the most popular episodes of this season, we have “Total Rickall” and “Get Schwifty” (which has also become one of Rick’s catchphrases).

  • Summary

The third season starts its action just where the second season left it. We see how Rick is finally freed, but actually, he learns that he was being used in a simulation. Morty and Summer arrived to get him back home safely.

They start this new journey, and over time, they actually managed to free the Earth from all the aliens that were there before. We learn that Rick goes to a McDonald’s for the Szechuan sauce in simulation, and he doesn’t really stop talking about it. (Fun fact, McDonald’s actually made a limited series of the Szechuan sauce for fans).

Summer gets more screen time this season as she goes with Rick and Morty in their adventures. They visit a weird world that’s quite similar to Mad-Max, and the brothers accept the fact that their parents are getting a divorce, and there’s nothing that they can really do about it.

Among the things that happen in this season, we see how Rick manages to turn himself into a pickle. Together with his grandson, they joined the Vindicators, Summer gets turned inside out just by accident, and we also learn about the existence of another planet that’s full of Rick and Morty’s. This planet is led by an evil Morty. We also have a massive argument between Rick and Morty, but not before seeing some of their best journeys together.

In the last episodes, we see how Rick represents a danger to the President of the United States, as he is trying to prove that he is smarter than the President when it comes to secret government businesses. Together with his daughter, they are trying to find her friend in Froopyland.

The entire family decides to help Rick have a free life – you read that right, Jerry went, too. When Rick finds his family again, he starts on the accepts Jerry. Of course, we can all see that he is a bit disappointed with the fact that he is not the head of the family, but we are shown that he actually cares about his family even if he doesn’t really show it.

  • Summary

In this season, we get to see more character development for both Rick and Morty. There’s a lot of backstories, and the universes are developed more than the series has been showing so far. In the very first episode, we see Rick and Morty trying to find a special crystal, but Rick actually dies. He, however, manages to revive himself and stops Morty for using the crystal for fun. This could lead to disaster, as it could be used for all the wrong reasons.

We also learned that Rick has a private bathroom on other planets where he went with business. We get to see how Rick releases an intruder and then tries to hunt him down. Rick and Morty end up in a heist convention where Rick creates a bot that could pull quite an impressive heist.

Morty gets a dragon, and Rick agrees. He gets him from a wizard. However, the situation escalates when the wizard demands his dragon back. There’s also the snake-time continuum, in which Morty kills a snake by accident, and it all turns into an incredible journey for both of them.

In the final episode, we see how Morty and Summer have a better relationship as siblings, but the family is turned upside down when Rick does an unexpected thing that left us all shocked.
